Many times I am consulted for cases, and I am posed with the question “do I need to hire a lawyer?“. Right now there are more resources to self-help programs for any legal issue. Ads for Legal Zoom are abundant. Online resources like Avvo allows lawyers to answer questions. The local clerk’s office has packages for small claims cases and simplified divorces.
My answer goes back to the old adage “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.” Meaning that when it comes to the legal profession, one small step in the wrong direction can greatly affect your case, claim, or defense. Many times you can’t undo what you have done.
When you hire a lawyer, you are getting their training; experience; their familiarity with the jurisdiction, prosecutor, or Judge. In the case of a personal injury action, the knowledge of what your case is worth. You can’t put a price tag on these things.
If you are reading this because you did a search of “do I need a lawyer” think to yourself, would you do self surgery if you needed it? Of course not.
Be smart, consult an attorney, ask about their qualifications, training and experience.
